OUR LIFE CHANGING GAIT-BASED ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE

When we move incorrectly, our body adapts. These adaptations to dysfunctional movement cause pain, dysfunctions and malformations. Because of this fact, we know that dysfunctional movement is the root cause of most of our problems.

This is why we use the gait cycle as our primary diagnostic/assessment tool. Whether you’re an elite athlete or an office worker, you’ll be hitting the treadmill for your initial assessment. If you are in too much pain to run, you can walk at whatever pace is possible for you.

As posture specialists, we also utilise postural photos to evaluate the impact of your movement on your standing posture. These "before" photos serve as a valuable benchmark for tracking your progress throughout your training journey with us. They highlight the numerous improvements that are to come.

Furthermore, we employ gait cycle footage to analyse your walking pattern in slow motion. By comparing it with the movements of high-performing sprinters, we can identify any areas of dysfunction. For instance, we may notice that you turn less to the left than to the right. We might also see that your left hip drops because of lack of engagement in your core.

We find your walking and standing problems, then create exercises just for you to fix them. These exercises make you stronger.

They improve balance and hydrate your connective tissue. They also enhance symmetry in relation to gravity and the ground. This leads to better overall connectivity and coordination.

Lachlan visited @fp_brisbane for severe lower back and sciatic pain in his left leg caused by a rowing injury. This was L5s1 pars defects and herniated disc.

He also had a shoulder reconstruction because of a rugby injury. He also had a shoulder reconstruction from a rugby injury. After 6 months of training we have been able to get him free of pain and adding mass to a more symmetrical decompressed structure.

Due to severe head trauma received early last year, training @melissathewong has been a tedious process. Moving around was difficult for her because her thinking and balance got worse quickly, causing dizziness and unsteadiness.

The application of @functionalpatterns correctives (IMAPS) and myofascial release entirely brought about the changes seen here. Training based on our body's natural design improves all body systems, including balance and coordination.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Biomechanics is the science of human movement. The study of human biomechanics allows us to identify strong trends that improve performance, rehabilitate and prevent injury.

  • We use the gait cycle as our main form of assessment for everyone who comes to see us. The most accurate way for us to see your gate cycle is by having you run and playing it back in slow-motion.

    Why? Because when we walk or stand, it is difficult to see areas that need improvement because of a lack of motion. Covering up problems by ‘actively’ standing or walking is also common in posture photos and walking gait.

    When you run at your maximum speed, you have little control over your gait. Therefore, we are able to find even the smallest problems in your gait cycle to work on.

    We use gait cycle in biomechanics because it translates into all other movement’s. If you can run better, then you can sit better, throw better, stand better ect.

  • Yes, but not by getting you on a treadmill and ‘teaching you how to run.’ Firstly, we identify which aspects of your gait are disconnected, asymmetrical or harmful. Next, we breakdown the correct version of that movement into an exercise for you.

    For example, imagine your right hip drops during your run because of a lack of core tension. We would create/perform an exercise with you that replicates the motion using correct core tension. Once you do this enough, it will translate to the treadmill AND translate into your everyday life. This is what gets you out of pain and looking more symmetrical.

  • As Naudi Aguilar, the Founder of Functional Patterns puts it - ‘Not only do grains inflame the gut and lead to a range of issues related to chronic inflammation, but they interfere with deep core tension and the intrinsic stability of the spine.’

    Grains contribute to bloating, inflammation and dehydration. Many studies have shown this.

    This is not only evident in much of the literature, it is also profoundly evident in our practice. We see an immense correlation between

    • clients who eat a grain-rich diet

    • and clients who have an inability to make progress.

    Much of the work we do requires core tension. Core tension is reduced by bloating and inflammation.

    We also require hydration of the tissue. This is also inhibited by the consumption of dehydrating foods such as grains.

  • As Functional Patterns Founder, Naudi Aguilar, put it:

    ‘The more you do repetitive motions that involve spinal compression, the more the asymmetries that are already present in your body are going to calcify over time’

    The biggest problem with the back squat, that nobody else will tell you, is that it's nearly impossible NOT to fall into an asymmetrical shift or twist during squat. At some level, the more back squats you do, the more you lock in your body's dysfunctions.

    The more you do repetitive motions that involve spinal compression, the more the asymmetries that are already present in your body are going to calcify over time. In other words, you get stronger but in the worst way possible. You get stronger legs, but also stronger ingrained asymmetries.

  • ‘Everybody draws the assumption that flexibility is a good thing when it comes to alleviating muscle tightness and joint discomfort.

    The human body doesn’t just magically figure out how to move in space when you implement a stretch. This is especially true as it relates to muscular function. In order for a muscle to be programmed in motion, it needs to have the capacity to initiate a contraction. When muscles move together in sync, the body moves. But when muscles are overstretched, they contract less effectively, fuelling the tightness people feel all over their body. In other words, lengthening muscles with stretching protocols doesn't make you move better. In fact, even the science has stated as much! While stretching might feel good, aside from the pleasurable sensations, it doesn't actually enhance movement or reduce injuries as previously thought.’ - Naudi Aguilar

  • ‘From our perspective, a scientific definition of "functional" isn't arbitrary, it is biological.

    It comes down to a two step process: first, you define the organism; then, you identify their primary movement functions.

    Training to specifically enhance those foundational elements of an organism's movement is what defines functional training. It's really that simple.

    As an example, let's say you were tasked with training a dog to move better. You've already defined the organism (ie: a dog).

    Next, you recognise that dogs move in a particular fashion. They don't prioritise hopping on two legs like a kangaroo, crawling like a lizard, swimming like a fish, or flying like a bird.

    At their foundation, dogs are quadrupeds, meaning the vast majority of the time they move around on four legs.

    Now that you've solidified their primary mode of movement, the next step is figuring out how to best enhance a dog's functionality.’
