What Options Do You Have To Straighten Your Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. To an extent, every human on earth has a degree of scoliosis.

However, when the curve becomes severe enough to notice, or it impacts your life, it is time to focus on correcting it. Scoliosis is a progressive condition. The earlier you can stop progression and begin improvement, the better.

The mainstream options for those who suffer with a scoliosis are to either:

  1. worsen at an unpredictable rate (cob angle)

  2. or get scoliosis surgery to either fuse the spine to itself or to a rod.

These options are archaic and the more we learn about the body, the more we learn about why the spine shifts like this in the first place. Moreover, we have learned how to bring it back into alignment naturally.

How Do We Straighten Scoliosis Naturally?

Functional Patterns counteract the motions that lead to the large curve by activating the right muscles in the right sequence.

This complex process has naturally straightened the spines of many clients. These people now have a quality of life that surpasses what they were told to expect. Most cases of scoliosis are said to require treatment such as physical therapy and various types of braces. We prefer our method of treating scoliosis!

Functional Patterns is:

  • a fraction of the cost of surgery,

  • has no downtime,

  • addresses the underlying cause of scoliosis,

  • and has several other benefits along the way

Functional Patterns is the best option for people with scoliosis. It should be used as a treatment tool before approaching a major physical event such as surgery. If you have already undergone surgery, we can also help you to rehabilitate.

Case Study - 5 month scoliosis and cognitive transformation

Natural Scoliosis Correction - Oct 28 2019 > Jan 7 2020 > March 13 2020

✅ Improvements in scoliotic curve

✅ Improved joint stacking and scapular positioning

✅ Improved balance and coordination

✅ Improved cognitive function and proprioception

Due to severe head trauma received early last year, training @melissathewong has been a tedious process. Dynamic movement was originally not an option. This was because her cognitive functions would decline rapidly resulting in dizziness and a loss of balance.

The changes seen here are possible because of @functionalpatterns correctives (IMAPS) and myofascial release. Training in relation to our biomechanical blueprint targets all systems of the body, including the vestibular system. Because of this, we saw an improvement in her balance and coordination as we began to improve her movement. We are looking forward to continued results from this dedicated client.

Protocol Used For This Natural Scoliosis Reversal

  • 100% Functional Patterns Techniques

  • Gait & postural analysis to identify the root causes of the scoliosis (shifts, drops, abnormal rotations, poor connection between the hips and ribs, abnormal intra-abdominal pressure ect).

  • Myo-Fascial Release - especially at the beginning to assist in rehydrating the fascia

  • Biomechanics Training via Corrective Functional Patterns Chambers/IMAPS (the secret sauce) to balance out abnormalities seen in the gait footage

  • Eventually dynamic exercises once the clients coordination and vestibular function had improved using the former mentioned techniques

  • Dietary protocol for greater core tension and modulation of intra-abdominal pressure

  • Lifestyle interventions for stress, sleep and wellbeing management

What Does Melissa Have To Say?

I have seen significant improvement to my coordination, posture and proprioception through Functional Patterns. These sessions have played a key part in my journey to recover my cognitive and physical functions after my injury. Shane is an effective coach with a keen eye and knowledge for movement patterns. I have really enjoyed training with him.

Case Study - 6 month natural scoliosis correction After Post-Surgery Relapse

✅ Improvements in scoliotic curve

✅ Decompressed lumbar

✅ Improved hip positioning

✅ Decreased Pain

✅ Improved head position

✅ Improved quality of life and sleep

✅ Improved Symmetry

Courtney had a 50 degree curve T6-T11 before having spinal fusion in 2002 via thoracotomy. This brought the curve to 7 degrees.

A second curve developed in 2018, a 40 degree curve from T5-L2. This can be seen in the photo on the left. With a steel rod in the thoracic spine, there is a limitation to what we are able to do.

Nevertheless, her quality of life is improving along with the structure of her spine as it comes closer to neutral. The changes that she implemented to get these results were surgery-free. This majorly reduced the risk of another curve appearing in the future. This is why it is SO important to address the underlying cause and to avoid surgical bandaids.

Protocol Used For This Natural Scoliosis Reversal

  • Because of relapse post-surgery we focused heavily on identifying the root cause of the scoliosis

  • We analysed gait & postural to identify the root causes of the patients scoliosis. We wanted to know the biomechanical affect of surgical history. We looked for shifts, drops, abnormal rotations, poor connection between the hips and ribs, abnormal intra-abdominal pressure ect.

  • Myo-Fascial Release - especially at the beginning to assist in rehydrating the fascia and improving range of motion

  • We underwent Biomechanics Training using Corrective Functional Patterns Chambers/IMAPS (the FP secret sauce). This was to balance out the abnormalities seen in the gait footage

  • Dynamic exercises to integrate biomechanical changes into fast paced activity

  • Dietary protocol for greater core tension and modulation of intra-abdominal pressure

  • Lifestyle interventions for stress, behaviour/language, sleep and wellbeing management

How Does Courtney Feel About This?

I have been training with Shane at Functional Patterns for 6 months now to help with my scoliosis pain. I’ve had significantly reduced levels of pain and a visibly straighter back. I look forward to making more improvements as we continue. Excellent trainer, I highly recommend Functional Patterns Brisbane for anyone wanting to improve their lives

Naturally Improved Scoliosis & REDUCED Scapular Winging in Just 10 Months

Straighten Scoliosis Naturally

Biomechanics Improvements:

  • Naturally Improved scoliosis

  • Improved scapular positioning - reduced scapular winging

  • No more neck and back pain

  • Ribcage more neutral

In the beginning the pain was unbearable in my upper right thoracic and right scapular which would leave me unmotivated and fatigued 24/7.

Nowadays this region is feeling pain free, occasionally I will experience some discomfort in the area and I will have to release the muscles around this point with a lacrosse ball but then it subsides and is fine. Apart from this slight discomfort, I experience no pain. I’m confident that we will be able to keep addressing my imbalances and work towards feeling better connected and more athletic with my entire structure.

Being pain free has improved my ethic to work and has made me a more productive tradie. As well as allowing me to relax and enjoy a better work life balance.

How Does The Client Feel About Straightening Their Scoliosis Naturally?

I’ve been training with Louis at FP Brisbane weekly for just over 7 months. I was looking initially for something to help with my scoliosis whilst doing traditional strength training. In the process I have found a program that can completely replace what I was doing beforehand.

Initially it was difficult to see how I could use this program without having a trainer. As my understanding of the concepts grew I’m confident I can now take what I’ve learnt away.

I can continue to progress and eliminate more dysfunctions independently. My scoliosis has definitely improved and friends comment on it regularly. They also mention how much better my posture looks

straightening a spine from a-z (what training with functional patterns Brisbane looks like)

First - you will have a discussion on the phone with one of our professionals or client advocates.

During this call you will discuss a brief history of your condition, your goals and availability. From this information, we will match you with one of our Biomechanics Specialists. You can meet the entire team here. Each and every specialist in the clinic is trained in Human Biomechanics and has extensive experience working with and significantly improving scoliosis in our clients.

Your first session will be 90 minutes long.

Our comprehensive initial consult involves a gait and/or activity assessment. Ee analyse your gait cycle in slow motion and highlight dysfunctions present.

This is a crucial part of the appointment. It enables us to tailor a program that suits your body and not just a cookie-cutter-approach.

We will then take you through myofascial release techniques that will help you to get on top of any dysfunctions we have identified. Specific postural correctives, chambers and dynamic exercises may follow depending on how your body handles each level of exercise.

What Happens After My First Session?

So you have completed your initial assessment and session, what now? Your Biomechanics Instructor will discuss their recommendations while taking into consideration your unique situation and their assessment findings.

Estimating the duration of improvement of scoliosis can be like predicting the length of string. However, we do know that the more time you are able to spend doing your Functional Patterns training, the faster you will make progress. Most protocols include 2-3 60 minute sessions per week alongside homework. You can also include some group classes to practice your fundamentals.

Following your initial consult, we will continue to build on the techniques you learned through:

  • chambers,

  • correctives

  • and dynamic exercise.

Improvement in gait cycle is our number one metric to objectively measure your progress. We will usually take progress videos of running/sprinting/your specific activity during these following sessions.

We will work on breaking down the dysfunctions that lead to your scoliosis and pain while building new, functional patterns. This will result in a dramatic decrease in pain and an improvement in spinal alignment. We can also improve your movement, agility, strength, posture, aesthetic and overall quality of life.

Finally, The Result!

Our goal is to get you an incredible result. Our entire business and methodology is based around noticeably straightening spines and decreasing pain to the point where people cannot ignore the work we do. If you want to change your life and be our next result, get in touch and start your incredible journey with Functional Patterns Brisbane.

Why We Use Gait Analysis For Scoliosis Assessment

Gait analysis is the best scoliosis assessment tool because it provides a comprehensive evaluation of a person's walking pattern. This includes the movement of their joints, muscles, and other body segments during walking.

Our biomechanics specialists will highlight the exact movement patterns that contribute to your scoliosis. For example, when your right foot hits the floor, one of your leg muscles may switch off. Your hips may shift to the right and your ribcage may shift left to compensate. This is a random example, but it illustrates the genius of gait analysis for scoliosis.

Gait analysis allows our practitioners to observe the various parts of your gait cycle/movement patterns. It allows us to identify any abnormalities or asymmetries that may affect your day-to-day life and any training you partake in. You will leave your assessment with concrete, objective measurements that will help you to gain a deep understanding of the true causes of your scoliosis.

Your movement is a complex and dynamic process that involves the interaction of multiple systems, including the musculoskeletal, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. During walking, the body must:

  • maintain balance,

  • generate sufficient force to move forward

  • and adapt to changes in the environment.

Abnormalities in any of these systems can lead to changes in your walking pattern. This:

  • increases the risk of injury,

  • negatively impacts cell signalling,

  • leads to chronic pain,

  • causes chronic dehydration,

  • causes poor posture,

  • perpetuates more a-symmetries (or scoliosis in this case) over time,

  • switches off key muscle groups

  • and perpetuates the problem.

Gait analysis allows our practitioners to see how you orient yourself around your spine and interact with gravity/the floor. This includes observing:

  • the joint angles,

  • muscle activity,

  • ground reaction forces ect.

We can then develop targeted interventions to improve your gait and therefore reduce pain, injury risk, asymmetries, scoliosis, and poor posture.

What Is Scoliosis? And Is Scoliosis Genetic?

Scoliosis is a medical condition that involves a sideways curvature of the spine. Instead of the normal straight alignment, the spine develops a curve that can resemble an "S" or "C" shape. This curvature can affect the appearance of the back, and in severe cases it can cause:

  • pain,

  • discomfort,

  • and even difficulty breathing.

Scoliosis can develop at any age, but it is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence, typically during a growth spurt. It affects both males and females, but females are more likely to develop scoliosis that requires medical intervention.

There are several different types of scoliosis, including:

  1. Idiopathic scoliosis: This is the most common type of scoliosis, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in adolescents and has no known cause.

  2. Congenital scoliosis: This type of scoliosis is present at birth. It is an abnormality in spinal development in utero.

  3. Neuromuscular scoliosis: Scoliosis caused by a neurological or muscular disorder. For example, cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.

  4. Degenerative scoliosis: Scoliosis that develops in adults as a result of age-related changes in the spine. For example, arthritis.

Scoliosis severity is measured by the angle of the spines curve. Mild scoliosis measures between 10-20 degrees, moderate scoliosis measures between 20-50 degrees, and severe scoliosis measures over 50 degrees.

Exercises TO IMPROVE scoliosis

To naturally straighten a scoliosis, you will need to activate the muscles that have deactivated due to the curve. As your spine pulls in one direction, the muscles pull to that side. This disengages important muscles for spinal alignment.

A couple of sentences cannot explain Functional Patterns. However, the basic premise involves the activation of necessary muscles through the use of truly functional movement. Reactivating these muscles can take some time.

With our help, you are assisted into positions during exercise to switch those muscles back on. Once you begin to feel these muscles again while training, you will begin to notice more symmetry in your structure and less pain.

While everybody is different, this has been the experience of many people who have given Functional Patterns a chance. We have helped many people avoid spinal surgery by straightening their spines naturally.
