Is your Poor Posture a pain in the back, neck and everywhere in between?

Ready to address your postural issues at their core and say goodbye to them forever? Functional Patterns is the posture correction clinic for you. Our holistic method of functional movement and lifestyle has proven itself as the best around through its incredible results. We want to work with you to get you standing tall, proud and pain-free.

Static posture is an essential aspect of our physical health. It plays a crucial role in our overall well-being, including our hormones. Good posture helps to keep our bones, muscles, and joints in alignment, which can help prevent pain and injuries.

Poor posture can lead to a host of health problems, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, fatigue, and even hormonal issues. It can also affect our confidence and self-esteem, as well as our mood and cognitive function.

Unfortunately, most of us cannot simply pull ourselves into a good posture. Our bodies may experience even more pain from trying to stand up straighter. The general idea of good posture, pulling the shoulders back, often causes back and shoulder blade issues. It reduces the amount of space for the shoulder blades to sit, and often results in winging.

Some people try gadgets like a kyphosis posture corrector, a neck posture corrector or a back brace for posture. The issue with these gadgets is that they do not actual address the root cause. Why is your posture bad in the first place? This is an important question to ask yourself.

Something like a posture support brace only holds you in place. It does not address the weak muscles that led to the poor posture. In fact, this type of passive assistance can weaken your muscles further.

Why is correct posture so important?

Good posture has many benefits, both physical and psychological. Some of the most significant benefits include:

  1. Reduced pain: Good posture helps to distribute your body weight evenly, which reduces strain on your joints and muscles. This can help to alleviate pain and prevent future injuries.

  2. Improved breathing: When you have good posture, your lungs have more space to expand, allowing you to take deeper breaths. This can improve your oxygen intake and help you feel more energised.

  3. Increased energy: Good posture can help to improve your circulation, which can boost your energy levels and reduce fatigue.

  4. Improved digestion: When you sit up straight, your digestive organs have more room to function properly. This can help to reduce bloating and constipation.

  5. Improved mood: Good posture can help to boost your confidence and self-esteem, which can improve your overall mood and mental health.

How Does Irenie Feel About Her Postural Transformation?

“I started FP to try and address my poor posture and the persistent pains in my lower back and knees. Since working with Functional Patterns Brisbane I have had to reflect on the daily habits and patterns that had been making me so uncomfortable in my own body. Prior to this I had been generally eating healthy and exercising with Pilates and yoga, however the improvements I have felt in my posture and wellbeing since stating FP in September 2021 have been incomparable.

I think it has a lot to do with how focused Shane is on ensuring the specific and precise execution of each movement to engage and work the whole body in an integrated manner. You leave feeling both exhausted and energised, I always have an extra bounce in my step after training. I feel I have also gained a sense of purpose and drive to develop and maintain better mobility, strength, and balance well into my older age.”

How Does Matt Feel About His Transformation?

Before starting FP I was in chronic pain from head to toe on the left side of my body and had suffered constant headaches for most of my adult life.

Not only was it the physical pain, but it was taking a toll mentally - causing low mood, irritability and not being able to concentrate or think straight. Performing the simplest of tasks was becoming a real struggle in my work and family life.

After multiple physiotherapy and remedial massage appointments I was left angry and frustrated when I realised my pain was not getting any better, with no hope in sight. That’s when I found @functionalpatterns.

After 8 months training with Jen I can now move better, with more tension in my body and I’m completely pain free.

Mentally I feel great now and at 35 years old this is the best I’ve ever felt in my life. Starting with FP has been a life saver- thank you Jen and @fp_brisbane

Scoliosis & Posture Correction Before & After

This result came from 13 Months of using nothing but Functional Patterns at our posture correction clinic in East Brisbane. Natalie trained with her practitioner just once per week and practiced her corrective exercises at home.

How Does Natalie Feel About Her Scoliosis & Posture Transformation?

When I began training with Jen, I’d been experiencing discomfort and pain in my body for about 10 years that no physiotherapist, osteopath or masseuse was able to relieve.

The pain was a dull ache and some times turned into a burning pain that could be up to a 8/10 depending on what I had been doing. It radiated up the muscles to the left of my lumbar spine and sometimes crept around to my lower left ribs. I also had sharper pain intermittently in my left SI joint.

After having children, my scoliosis left me feeling worse and wearing baby carriers / carrying kids around exacerbated it. Not only did I feel soreness, pain and discomfort every day but I felt extremely twisted and struggled to comfortably stand with good posture.

I was also only able to sleep on my back as side positions were uncomfortable.

Just over a year of training and I am now pain free (a 0/10) and have vastly improved my posture. I am also able to sleep on my side comfortably and feel so much stronger in my body as well as less twisted.

Jen gave me exercises and tools to keep up the functional training at home. Thanks to @functionalpatterns I am much more aware of my body, what causes the dysfunction and ways to relieve it.

It has been a hugely rewarding training and process after years of thinking there was nothing I could do to fix my back issues

What Causes Bad Posture?

James Bazley, Pro Australian Cricketer

BIOMECHANICAL FACTORS

The way you walk, sit, lay down, run and generally move in your day-to-day life has a profound affect on your posture. Think of your posture as the way you are ‘vertically stacked,’ similar to a game of Jenga. If you gradually remove random pieces of the Jenga tower, it eventually starts leaning over to one side. It loses its structural integrity and eventually crumbles.

While humans are more complex than a game of small wooden blocks, the same principles of physics apply. Gravity is a force that acts upon us all. Gravity is what keeps our feet on the ground. We need to make sure that our various muscles, joints, bones etc are firmly in place and stacked correctly on top of one another. .

ARE YOU BREATHING CORRECTLY?

Many people do not connect the breath to the structure of an organism. The breath is a powerful force within the body. Breath is capable of influencing the bodies structure based on where it holds its pressure.

Take a deep breath. Where do you feel it?

Do you notice certain parts of your body rise and fall? Perhaps you feel your breath in your shoulders, or maybe it travels to the lower belly. The areas that your breath reside grow space for you to do so.

If you take deep breaths into your chest and shoulders, you will grow a bigger frame to accomodate. If you take small, shallow breaths into your stomach, you will likely express this in your frame. Much of postural correction lies in breathing correction.

Where do you want to create pressure to expand and strengthen? Where do you want to reduce the pressure?

Our posture specialists can tell you exactly where you should aim to increase or decrease pressure. The exercises they prescribe modulates your posture in incredible ways.

A-SYMMETRICAL DOMINANCE

Do you have a favourite side? Of course you do. We are generally either ‘left hand dominant’ or ‘right hand dominant.’

This one-sided dominance does not stop at our hands.

  • If you are about to fall over, which leg always comes to your rescue?

  • When you brush your teeth or your hair, is it with the same hand you right with?

  • What about when you play sports or exercise?

Every person on earth has a more coordinated side, arm, leg. While you may not think much about this, it has a vast effect on your posture. Achieving a symmetrical posture comes from developing and balancing both sides of your body.

Regardless of your one-sided dominance, you can still focus on the macro movements you do everyday. You can try to make your standing, walking, running & throwing more balanced and symmetrical. This will correct your posture more than anything else.

Kyphosis vs Lordosis

Understanding the differences between Kyphosis and Lordosis is crucial for maintaining a healthy spine and posture. Kyphosis is an excessive outward curve of the spine. This leads to a hunched back appearance, commonly seen in the thoracic region.

Lordosis involves an excessive inward curve of the spine. This often affects the lumbar region, resulting in a pronounced lower back arch. Both conditions can cause discomfort and lead to long-term health issues if left untreated.

Kyphosis exercises to reverse cervical lordosis often fall short. Conditions such as kyphosis lordosis scoliosis require expert precision and consistency to correct.

Our physical therapy and treatment options at Functional Patterns Brisbane support upright posture. We help you to stand up straight and achieve a natural curve through gait-based techniques. We address the root cause of spinal conditions such as thoracic kyphosis to improve your posture long-term.

Our highly specialises exercises strengthen the muscles that lead to excessive spinal curve. By addressing your underlying movement issues, you can maintain good posture for many years to come.

We have seen conditions such as spinal deformities and congenital kyphosis improve overtime. Correcting the way your body moves is your secret weapon to improving your posture and kyphosis.

As you can see - there are a lot of posture gadgets on the market. The truth is, if it were that simple, poor posture would not be so common. The reason you have bad posture is because of your movement patterns and lifestyle.
A posture corrector brace will not solve the root causes of poor posture. The 'best posture corrector in Australia' is correct movement.
